A creator sells a $20 template pack on Gumroad and has a good month: 100 sales, $2,000 in revenue. Gumroad's fee on direct sales is 10% plus $0.50 per transaction, so $250 of that month goes to the platform before anything else. At that point most sellers start looking around, and the search for a Gumroad alternative begins.
This post compares six platforms people move to: PapelShip, Lemon Squeezy, Payhip, Podia, SendOwl and Whop. It sets out what each one charges, how and when you get paid, whether buyers can pay in crypto, whether software license keys are built in, and what kind of storefront you get. It ends with a way to choose and a step-by-step migration plan. Competitor fees were checked on each company's official pricing page in October 2026.
What is the best Gumroad alternative?
The best Gumroad alternative depends on what you sell and how much. For software sellers who want license keys, crypto payments and a branded store in one place, PapelShip fits. For a merchant of record that handles global sales tax at a lower fee than Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy fits. Payhip suits ebooks and downloads on a budget, Podia suits courses and coaching, SendOwl suits sellers who already have a website and only need checkout and delivery, and Whop suits paid communities and memberships.
That is the short answer. The longer one depends on a few criteria that are worth writing down before you compare any sales pages, because the platforms are built around very different ideas of what a seller needs.
- Fee model. A percentage per sale costs nothing when you sell nothing and a lot when you sell well. A monthly plan does the opposite. Work out your monthly revenue and compare total cost, not headline rates.
- Payouts. Some platforms collect the money and pay you on a schedule. Others connect your own Stripe or PayPal account, so the money lands with you as soon as the payment clears.
- Payment methods. Cards and PayPal are standard. Crypto, bank transfer and local gateways are not, and they matter if your buyers are outside the US and Europe.
- Licensing. If you sell software, plugins or tools, you need license keys generated and delivered at checkout, with an API to check them.
- Storefront and brand. A profile page on someone else's marketplace is different from a store on your own domain with your own theme.
- Tax handling. A merchant of record collects and remits sales tax and VAT for you. Without one, that work stays with you.
Six Gumroad alternatives at a glance
The table compares the six against Gumroad on the five points sellers ask about most. Payment processor fees from Stripe or PayPal, typically around 2.9% + 30 cents on a US card, apply on top wherever a platform uses your own processor account. Prices are as listed on each official pricing page in October 2026, so confirm them before you switch.
| Platform | Platform fees | Payouts | Crypto at checkout | License keys | Storefront |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gumroad (for reference) | 10% + $0.50 per direct sale, 30% on Discover sales, no monthly fee | Paid out by Gumroad by direct deposit or PayPal | No | Yes | Profile page and product pages |
| PapelShip | Free plan: 1.00% card, 1.69% crypto. Vaultie €5.99/mo: 0.49% / 0.69%. PapelShip+ €14.99/mo: 0% | Crypto instantly to your own wallet; cards through your gateway | Yes, BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC, TRX, DOGE | Yes, plus qPapel Auth for C, C++ and C# | Themed store builder, custom domain, free SSL |
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + $0.50 per transaction, some extra fees on international sales | Bank or PayPal, twice a month | No | Yes | Hosted store and checkout |
| Payhip | Free: 5%. Plus $29/mo: 2%. Pro $99/mo: 0%. Plus Stripe or PayPal fees | Straight to your PayPal or Stripe account | No | Yes | Store builder with themes |
| Podia | Mover $49/mo: 5%. Shaker $99/mo and Earthquaker $179/mo: 0%. Plus 2.9% + 30¢ processing | Through your Stripe or PayPal account | No | No | Website builder for courses and downloads |
| SendOwl | Launch $39/mo, Grow $87/mo, Scale $159/mo, no revenue cut, annual sales caps | Through your Stripe or PayPal account | No | Yes | Checkout and delivery for your existing site |
| Whop | 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card payment, +1.5% international, optional add-ons | Payout fees per withdrawal, e.g. $2.50 next-day ACH | No, crypto is a payout option only | No native keys; access by membership | Store page with marketplace listing |
Two columns do most of the sorting. The fee column tells you which model suits your volume, and the crypto and license key columns remove platforms that cannot sell what you sell, in the way your buyers want to pay.
The alternatives in detail
Each platform has a clear centre of gravity. Read the sections below for what each one is designed to do well, rather than as a scoreboard.
PapelShip
PapelShip is a digital commerce platform with software protection built in. You get a storefront builder with themes and a visual editor, a custom domain with free SSL, payment links, an embeddable checkout widget, subscriptions, coupons, staff accounts and reseller programs. Buyers can pay by card through gateways such as Stripe and PayTR, by bank transfer, with gift cards, or in crypto, which is paid wallet to wallet straight to your own wallet with instant payouts. License keys and files are delivered instantly at checkout, and software sellers can add qPapel Auth for HWID locking and server-side secrets in C, C++ and C#. Pricing runs from a Free plan to PapelShip+ at €14.99 a month, which charges 0% on store payments. The PapelShip vs Gumroad comparison goes through it side by side.
Lemon Squeezy
Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record for digital products and software, now part of Stripe. It charges 5% + $0.50 per transaction with no monthly fee, and that price includes tax collection, filing and remittance on your behalf. Some international payments carry small additional fees. License keys are issued automatically after each sale and can be deactivated or reissued, and payouts go out by bank or PayPal twice a month to more than 200 countries. It suits SaaS and software sellers who want global tax handled for them and are happy with card and PayPal checkout. See the PapelShip vs Lemon Squeezy comparison for the details.
Payhip
Payhip is a simple store for ebooks, courses, memberships and downloads. Every plan includes every feature; the difference is the transaction fee: 5% on the free plan, 2% on Plus at $29 a month and 0% on Pro at $99 a month, with Stripe or PayPal charging their own rates on top. Money goes straight to your PayPal or Stripe account when a sale completes. Payhip also offers software license keys with a verification API. It suits creators who want something close to Gumroad's simplicity with a cheaper path as sales grow. The PapelShip vs Payhip comparison covers the differences.
Podia
Podia is built for courses, coaching, webinars and communities, with downloads alongside. The Mover plan is $49 a month (or $42 billed yearly) with a 5% transaction fee; Shaker at $99 and Earthquaker at $179 a month charge no Podia fee. Stripe or PayPal processing of 2.9% + 30 cents applies on every plan. There are no software license keys and no crypto. It suits educators who want a course platform with a website attached, rather than a store for files or software. The PapelShip vs Podia comparison shows where each fits.
SendOwl
SendOwl handles checkout and delivery for sellers who already have a website, blog or Shopify store. It advertises flat pricing with no revenue cut: Launch at $39, Grow at $87 and Scale at $159 a month. Each plan has an annual sales cap ($10,000, $36,000 and $100,000) and a bandwidth allowance, and going over moves you up a plan. Payments run through your own Stripe or PayPal account, and software license keys are supported on all plans. It suits sellers with an existing audience and site who only need the selling layer. The PapelShip vs SendOwl comparison looks at the caps in practice.
Whop
Whop is a marketplace and platform for paid communities, memberships, Discord access and courses. There is no monthly fee; card payments cost 2.7% + $0.30 domestically, plus 1.5% for international cards and 1% for currency conversion, and optional tools such as tax remittance add their own percentage. Withdrawals carry payout fees, for example $2.50 for next-day ACH in the US or 5% + $1 to take payouts in crypto. It suits community and membership businesses that benefit from Whop's marketplace traffic. The PapelShip vs Whop comparison goes further.
A pattern runs through the six. Lemon Squeezy and Whop keep pricing simple by taking a percentage and running more of the money flow themselves. Payhip, Podia and SendOwl let you pay a monthly plan to bring the platform fee down or to zero, while your own Stripe or PayPal account handles the money. PapelShip sits in the second group but adds crypto, licensing and software protection, which matters mostly if you sell software or have buyers who prefer to pay in crypto.
What the fees look like at real volumes
Headline rates are hard to compare because some platforms charge per sale, some per month, and some both. The clearest way is to price one month at your own volume. Here is the $2,000 month from the introduction: 100 sales of a $20 product, paid by US cards. Where a platform uses your own processor, a typical 2.9% + 30 cents is included.
| Platform and plan | How the cost adds up | Approximate cost for the month |
|---|---|---|
| Gumroad, direct sales | 10% + $0.50 on each sale | $250 |
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + $0.50 on each sale | $150 |
| Payhip Free | 5% Payhip fee plus processing | $188 |
| Payhip Plus | $29 plan, 2% fee, plus processing | $157 |
| Podia Mover | $49 plan, 5% fee, plus processing | $237 |
| SendOwl Launch | $39 plan plus processing | $127 |
| Whop | 2.7% + $0.30 per card payment, before payout fees | $84 plus payout fees |
| PapelShip+ | €14.99 plan, 0% store fee, plus your card gateway's own fee | About €15 plus gateway fees |
The numbers move a lot with volume. At $200 a month, a no-monthly-fee platform such as Lemon Squeezy or Payhip Free is cheaper than any plan. At $10,000 a month, a 5% or 10% cut costs hundreds of dollars more than a flat plan. Lemon Squeezy's higher rate also buys merchant of record tax handling, which you would otherwise do yourself, so compare like with like. If your company is early, the PapelShip startup program gives a free paid plan for six months with a 0.10% fee for companies under €250,000 in annual revenue, and the pricing page lists every plan.

How to migrate from Gumroad
Moving a store is mostly about not breaking anything for existing customers. Plan it as a cutover with a short overlap, not a single switch on a Friday night.
Week 1
Export and rebuild
Products, files, customers
Week 2
Test purchases
Every product, every method
Week 3
Switch links
Site, socials, emails
Week 4+
Wind down
Keep old access working
- 01
Export your customers and sales
Download your customer list and sales history from Gumroad's analytics and audience pages as CSV. You need it for receipts, for re-sending access, and for an announcement email.
- 02
Collect your files and product copy
Gather the original files, cover images, descriptions, prices and any variants. Keep the same product names so returning buyers recognise them.
- 03
Rebuild products on the new platform
Create each product, upload files, and set up license keys if you sell software. If you used Gumroad license keys, import existing keys or issue new ones and tell customers which to use.
- 04
Connect payments and tax
Connect your card gateway and any extra methods such as crypto or bank transfer, and decide how sales tax and VAT will be handled now.
- 05
Make real test purchases
Buy each product with each payment method. Check that the file or key arrives instantly, the receipt is correct and refunds work.
- 06
Switch every link
Update links on your website, social profiles, video descriptions, email signatures and automations. Use redirects where you control the old URLs.
- 07
Tell your customers
Email existing buyers with the new store link and how to get future updates. Keep Gumroad products live but unlisted for a while so old download links keep working.
Subscriptions need extra care. Recurring payments on Gumroad cannot simply be moved to another processor, so most sellers let existing subscribers run on Gumroad and point new subscribers to the new store, or invite subscribers to resubscribe with a coupon. For software, see how to sell software licenses online and instant digital delivery for how keys and files reach buyers after checkout.

Pick for what you sell, not for the lowest headline rate
There is no single best Gumroad alternative. A course creator, a plugin developer and a Discord community owner need different things, and each of the six platforms here is built around one of those needs. Decide what you sell, how your buyers want to pay and who handles tax, then price a real month at your own volume.
Be realistic about what you will run yourself, too. A flat plan with your own Stripe account is cheaper on paper, but it gives you tax work that a merchant of record would have done. A percentage-based platform is simpler, but its cost grows with every sale. The right choice is the one whose trade-off you are happy to live with in a year, not only this month.
Whichever way you lean, test with a real purchase before you move your customers. Delivery speed, payout timing and the checkout your buyers see decide how a platform feels long after the fee comparison is forgotten. For a wider view of the whole process, read how to sell digital products online.
